Research contributors Yoshiaki Nishimura(Teikyo University), Fumikazu Sugiura(Teikyo University), Ichiro Iwasaki(IER),  Kazuhiron Kumo  (IER)
Within the framework of our project, we aimed to acquire copies of “the National Economy of *** Union Republic” on five countries of Central Asia, which the Lenin State Library and the State Public Historical Library of Russia possess. We succeeded in obtaining the copies by sending assistant researchers to the libraries, with the support of Professor S. Ryazantsev of the Institute of Socio-Political Research, the Russian Academy of Science, who has been working together with one of our project members for the past few years. We have added 90 volumes of statistical yearbooks of the former Soviet republics in Central Asia, to what was lacking in the Japanese collection. By enhancing our original collection, we also organized our resources of economical statistics of the Central Asian countries in the 20th century, and presented the preliminary results of our survey at the workshop organized in March 2011.

Each Participant in the project has proceeded with the investigation into the research area in charge. It can be said that, for the Soviet period, the compilation of basic statistical data has been done, although some lacunae appear in collected statistics. For analyses on the present Russia, using the statistical data, have been further developed. On the other hand, it is difficult to say that the task has been accomplished for Imperial Russia. Further effort is needed for this particular area.

This work calculates income, taxable income, and marginal tax rates of income from the Japanese micro data of household, “Zenkoku Shohi Zitai chousa”, and estimates the elasticity of taxable income with response to marginal tax rates in Japan. We articulate that the elasticity of taxable income is around 0.28 in Japan, but the estimate is depending on definition of control groups and career of the head of households.
