"Dating China's Growth Cycle: Correcting Measurement Bias through Comovements of GDP and Coincident Economic Indicators"

Abstract:

The dating of growth cycles in China faces numerous challenges. Measurement biases of very different types, affecting alternative measures of economic activity, certainly represent the major one. Existing work has only very partially tried to correct such biases, mostly through the combination of indicators in a coincident index (CEI). However such exercises have ignored the information contained in GDP growth, due to the suspected upward bias and smoothing affecting that series (mostly in its annual form). Since CEI and GDP may contain both noise and an informative component, extracting their common component seems likely to satisfy the well-known commoving nature of the business cycle. A Markov-switching VAR enables us to model the dynamic relationships between them and detect their joint turning points.
