The 36th Japan-Russia Far East Academic Symposium - Program

Date: December 13, 2025
Venue: Medium Lecture Hall, Osaka University Minoh Campus (Osaka Metro Minoh-Semba-Handai-Mae Station)

Co-organizers: Osaka University, Japan-Russia Society of Osaka, Kyoto University of Foreign Studies, Hitotsubashi University

As the season begins to show signs of autumn, we hope this message finds you well and thriving in your endeavors. Since 1984, the Japan-Russia Far East Academic Symposium has fostered ongoing dialogue between researchers and practitioners, particularly those affiliated with the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. However, following the 35th symposium held in 2019, the event was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the onset of the "special military operation," which brought about significant challenges. Now, after a six-year hiatus, we are pleased to announce that the 36th symposium will be held. Since the beginning of the "special military operation," Japan-Russia relations have undergone dramatic changes and remain in a highly unstable state. In this symposium, we aim to examine the political, economic, and social issues affecting Northeast Asia--including Japan-Russia relations--from a global perspective, while remaining grounded in the realities of a rapidly changing region. We are honored to welcome participants from the Institute of History, Archaeology, and Ethnography of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (based in Vladivostok), as well as members of the Institute of Economic Research in Khabarovsk. As in previous years, we hope to engage in open and candid discussions. We understand that everyone is busy, but we sincerely invite you to join us for this important occasion.

The detailed program can be found here.
