| 論題 | "Personality and Relationship Satisfaction and Durability" |
| 要旨 |
We use 11 waves of data from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey to examine how the personalities of couples impact their relationship satisfaction and durability. HILDA collects information on both locus-of-control (LoC) and the ‘Big Five’ personality traits. We first examine how both individual LoC and personality traits and the discordance within couples in these characteristics influence both member’s self-reported satisfaction with the relationship. We allow these relationships to differ for men and women and by whether the couple is married or in a de-facto relationship. We then estimate relationship duration models to examine the impact that i) relationship satisfaction; ii) individual LoC and personality traits; and iii) the discordance within couples in these characteristics has on the durability of relationships. We find that levels and within-relationship differences in LoC and emotional stability are important determinants of both relationship satisfaction and stability. Within-relationship differences in agreeability and openness to new experiences are also important determinants of relationship satisfaction but have less impact on relationship duration.
