"Mortality Decline, Increased Productivity, and the Ben-Porath Mechanism" [Presentation in English] Abstract: The twentieth century has seen a phenomenal decline in mortality and increase in productivity level. We study the effects of mortality decline and increased productivity on optimal schooling years and retirement age. It is shown that both endogenous variables move in the same direction in response to an exogenous shock. We trace the reason to the dynamic interaction between these two endogenous variables, and provide a proof of the underlying Ben-Porath mechanism. We also conduct computational analysis using the US data. Because of the substantial decline in mortality from 1900 to 1950, it is found that the effect of mortality decline on retirement age may dominate that of increased productivity during this period, ontrasting with the result in Bloom et al. (2014). Our results also suggest that the relative importance of mortality decline on schooling years is higher than that in Restuccia and Vandenbroucke (2013). |
