There is a growing trend towards convergence in competition polices of industrialised countries designed to achieve economic efficiency gains. However, further strengthening of the framework of international co-operation among industrialised countries, and between them and emerging market economies, is vital to enhance the beneficial effects of competition policy for the global economy. The establishment of a supranational global institution with legally binding power to enforce competition policy across countries is difficult to envisage at this time. Alternative suggestions have been made for enhanced international co-operation going beyond the principle of comity among nations.
