Previous Research
As a graduate student, I conducted a theoretical survey on Soviet mathematical
economics as well research in mathematical economics on decentralized optimal
planning mechanisms. Since my appointment to Hitotsubashi University, in
response to the changing times and changes in the environment for research
funding, I have focused on using computer simulation to examine the performance
of theoretical models and have conducted static and dynamic multi-sectoral
analyses using input-output tables on the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.
Since the break-up of the Soviet Union, I have concentrated on the transition
to a market economy, looking in particular at the following topics:
(1) modern time series analyses of the relationships between growth and
changes in oil prices (terms-of-trade and trading gains) and energy efficiency;
(2) analysis of the economic and industrial structure of the Russian and
Central Asian economies;
(3) comparative economics of emerging markets including BRICs and transition economies;
(4) statistical and institutional analysis of Russia's fiscal federalism
and its financial and securities market institutions;
(5) the estimation of historical GDP statistics of Russia, China, and the
Central Asian countries.
In addition, I am involved in research and teaching on environmental economics.
