Shinichiro Tabata (Slavic Research Center, Hokkaido University)

Specific features of transformation in the structure of the Russian economy during the period from 1991 to 2005 were analyzed, when the system transformation was being carried out. Major findings include 1) the emergence of a new mechanism of economic growth based on household consumption, 2) the significance of imported consumer goods in the new mechanism, financed by the large amount of foreign currency earned by exports of mineral resources such as oil and gas, and 3) the importance of the shift in comparative advantage of the Russian goods caused by considerable in exchange rates of the ruble in real terms.
