“Post-Socialist Land Reforms and Prospects of Large-Scale Farming in Transition Economies”
Rihito Yamamura (Slavic Research Center, Hokkaido University)

In this study, new structures of post-socialist farming that are being established following land reforms and privatization of agricultural enterprises in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union are analyzed. The discussion of the article is focused on the most important aspects of the problem : efficiency of the distribution of property rights following land reforms and privatization, characteristics of various forms of farming organizations that were created on the basis of socialist collective farms or state farms, factors that help large-scale post-socialist farms to survive in transition economies, and the viability and future prospects of large-scale farms.
