Abstract

Vol. 50, No. 1, pp. 11-22 (1999)

“International Monetary System -Present and Prospects-”
Masahiro Kawai (East Asia and Pacific, World Bank/Institute of Social Science, University of Tokyo)

The paper shows that the U.S. dollar has been the most dominant nominal-anchor currency in the world. As a result of the EU's transition to the final stage of the Economic and Monetary Union, the currency area formed by the newly introduced euro is expected to expand. The future role of the Japanese yen depends on what exchange rate arrangements the East Asian countries will adopt after the recovery from the current economic crisis.
