     1. Column

HATTORI, Masazumi
Professor, Industry-University-Government Collaboration / Research Division of Frontier Sciences in Economics, Institute of Economic Research, Hitotsubashi University

I began my current position in August of last year, on loan from the Bank of Japan. My research area is "financial economics": I think my definition of the field may be a bit broader than it is usually understood, and I am interested in various topics related to financial stability and monetary policy.

Until immediately before I arrived at this position, I worked for the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) for more than three years. For my first two years with the BIS, I worked at the BIS head office in Basel, Switzerland, where I was responsible for research on global financial markets, as well as preparing materials for and compiling records of meetings of representatives of central banks from around the world. After that, I transferred to the Representative Office for Asia and the Pacific in Hong Kong, where in addition to continuing to research global financial markets I also worked on activities including studies on financial economy and monetary policy in Japan.

While I had experience with a wide range of jobs at the Bank of Japan, my career there has been centered on research on domestic and international financial systems and academic research at its research institute. In addition to earning a doctoral degree from the University of Oxford, I also worked as a visiting research fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science after joining the Bank of Japan.

I am working on a number of research topics. As examples, I am studying a somewhat wide range of topics from ones related to central-bank communication and changes in the characteristics of the private sector's inflation forecasts in Japan to one concerning spillover of risk premiums on volatility of equity prices across countries. In my upcoming lecture course, after an introduction to financial economics, I plan to address a number of topics related to financial stability, including financial regulation, financial systems, and global financial risk.

I look forward to intellectual interaction with those both on and off campus during my term at this university.
