“A Revised Estimate of Food Consumption, 1923-1940”
Seiichi Eguchi (The Graduate School of Economics, Hitotsubashi University)

The purpose of this report is to try to verify a new estimation computed with following equation, over the period 1923-1940.
P=Σ{(p0iq0i/Σp0iq0i)*qti/q0i}=Σp0iqti/Σp0iq0i
P=index number of quantities,(1923-25=100), p=prices, q=quantities, i=items of foods expenditure, t=times(1923-40), i=1,2,3,…,37, t=1,2,3,…,18.
In this equation, there are 37 total food items, of which 31 items are index numbers computed with data in Sinohara, Miyahei(1967)Personal consumption Expenditure, LTES, vol. 6. The remaining 6 items are computed with data supplied by several food companies, associations of foods processing industries, and other sources. These sources are not based on estimates in LTES, vol. 6.
