Previous research
My major subjects are welfare economics and social choice theory. Representative topics I have worked on in these fields include axiomatic research on rational choice and revealed preference theory, the establishment of the general impossibility theorem in the context of social choice functions, the development of a theory of rights in social choice theory, the extension of the concept of equity-as-no-envy to social choice theory, the establishment of the excess entry theorem in relation to oligopolistic competition and economic welfare; the parallel axiomization of consequentialism and nonconsequentialism, and the analytical history of welfare economics and social choice theory. Against the background of this work, I have also been engaged in theoretical and  empirical research on Japan’s economic institutions and economic policy. In addition, I have been Chairman of the Far East Standing Committee of the Econometric Society, President of the Society for Social Choice and Welfare, President of the Japanese Economic Association, etc. At present, I am Vice President of the Science Council of Japan and founding Director of the Competition Policy Research Center within the Fair Trade Commission.
Current research projects
First, I am currently preparing the publication of two compilations of my research on welfare economics and social choice theory. The first, Choice, Opportunities and Procedures: Selected Papers of Kotaro Suzumura,is to be published by Basil Blackwell, while the second, Foundations of Normative Economics: Rational Choice and Social Valuation (in Japanese) is to be published by Iwanami Shoten. Second, I am planning to publish joint research with Professor Walter Bossert providing a systematic development of rational choice theory in a research monograph on Rational and Coherent Choice. Third, I am hoping to publish a book – The Logic and Ethics of Competition – illuminating the meaning and significance of competition based on an examination of the theory and history of thought on competition and economic welfare and the role and historical development of industrial and competition policy.
Keywords welfare economics, social choice theory, rational choice, revealed preference, equity-as-no-envy, consequentialism, non-consequentialism, excessive competition, excess entry theorem.
