Previous research
As a graduate student, I conducted a theoretical survey on Soviet mathematical economics as well research in mathematical economics on decentralized optimal planning mechanisms. Since my appointment to Hitotsubashi University, in response to the changing times and changes in the environment for research funding, I have focused on using computer simulation to examine the performance of theoretical models and have conducted static and dynamic multi-sector analyses using input-output tables on the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Since the break-up of the Soviet Union, I have concentrated on the transition to a market economy, looking in particular at the following three topics: (1) analysis of the economic and industrial structure of the Russian and Central Asian economy; (2) statistical and institutional analysis of Russia’s fiscal federalism and its financial and securities institutions. (3) the estimation of historical statistics of mining and manufacturing production in Russia, China, and the Central Asian republics. In addition, I am involved in research and teaching on environmental economics.
Current research projects
I am currently involved in research focusing mainly on the following five topics: (1) research on Russia’s medium-term optimal growth path; (2) the construction of international input-output tables for the BRICs and the former Soviet Union; (3) the estimation of long-term historical GDP statistics for Russia (from the 1860s to the present) and of GDP statistics for post-war China; (4) research on the gas and oil industry and advertising industry in Russia and Central Asia; (5) the measurement of the economic and non-economic value of the environment (coral reefs, the tundra, etc.). The above research projects primarily rely on empirical analysis, but also combine measurement with theory. The work on the international input-output tables is in collaboration with the Institute of Developing Economies, while that on oil and gas is a joint project with the Slavic Research Center of Hokkaido University.
